Makerspaces

Makerspace could also be a constructivist and constructionist movement that's taking the world by storm! Imagine DIY meets education! Makerspace isn't only a hack shop where you'll attend to find out the thanks to use an arc welder for the afternoon but a tutorial concept as well! A maker space presents readily available materials which can act as a provocation for inquiry, additionally as modern technology and items to make with.Makerspace is kind of a part itself, it is a mindset which is able to and will be taught. we've a student culture of children who have learned to consume technology; educational zombies with all of their technological skills residing within the swipe of a forefinger. With a maker space, we are ready to move beyond consumption to creation! There's strong advocacy for this kind of teaching and learning and it's important for policymakers to understand as we develop frameworks that move far-off from consumption, towards creation in our ...

The demise of school Libraries

From one coast to another, rudimentary and high school libraries are being disregarded, undermined, repurposed, deserted, and shut. A 2011 study led by my alumni understudies of 25 separate statewide investigations shows that understudies who go to schools with libraries that are staffed by guaranteed bookkeepers score better on perusing and composing tests than understudies in schools without libraries administrations. Also, it's lower-pay understudies who advantage the chief. This reasonable observational proof little affects spending cutters, notwithstanding.  They act erroneously like there's no connection between libraries and scholarly accomplishment. this can be regularly frequently occurring notwithstanding the genuine obvious truth that we as a whole know school libraries are profoundly compelling. there's some expectation, in any case, and it comes from enactment consistently passed on July 8 by the senate. The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association and henc...

Cloud computing in libraries

Makerspace may be a constructivist and constructionist movement that's taking the planet by storm! Imagine that DIY meets education! Makerspace isn't only a hackshop where you'll be able to go learn the way to use an arc welder within the afternoon, but also an academic concept! Makerspace is over just space, it's thinking which will and may be learned. we've got a student culture of kids who have learned to consume technology; Educational zombies with all their technological skills in running your finger. With the creative space, we will move from consumption to creation! This kind of teaching and learning could be a strong supporter and it's essential for policy makers to grasp how we create frameworks that move from consumption to creation in our academic environment. Makerspace is about "turning knowledge into action" and provides a true opportunity to push personal learning. The creators' movement is about teaching and learning focused on th...

Makerspaces in Libraries --- by Patty Hiebert

Over the past decade, libraries have felt growing pains as they work to stay relevant to the communities they serve. “Makerspaces,” as an extension of library programming like STEAM, has more recently come to the forefront of the conversation. Some argue that library “makerspaces” programs are yet another stepping stone on the continuum of serving the public by providing current and relevant programs and services. Others maintain that makerspaces programs are an inefficient expenditure and are a burden libraries cannot afford to bear. While the concept of makerspaces is exciting on many levels, we have to ask ourselves whether the benefits outweigh the costs.   In this day and age of fast technology and virtual everything, libraries are thinking of new ways to draw the community together and offer programs that are practical as well as engaging. Johnathan Hunley describes makerspaces in his article “Making Space for Fun Lessons,” published in The Washington Post (2017). H...

Cloud Computing in Libraries: A Global Outlook by Sara Zeller

Cloud Computing in Libraries: A Global Outlook By Sara Zeller      Every night I try and take a walk around the neighborhood or one of my kids sport tracks and listen to at least one episode of my favorite podcasts.  A few weeks ago the podcast Pantsuit Politics did an episode dedicated to Bitcoin.  In general I have a minimal understanding of the concept but as they went into detail regarding the auctioning of certain NFT’s or non-fungible tokens on sites like NBA Top Shot, I understood more clearly how delicate the cloud computing system is in regards to data storage.  In  What Cloud Computing Means to You,  the Wall Street Journal defines it as this, “The innovation is called "cloud computing" and, simply put, it is the technology behind web-based services that store your digital files--from videos and songs to books and personal photos--remotely and offer you access from multiple devices through a browser or downloadable app” (W...

Making Makerspaces Accessible by Sara Zeller

Making Makerspaces Accessible  By Sara Zeller   “Ultimately, the outcome of maker education and educational makerspaces leads to determination, independence and creative problem solving, and an authentic preparation for the real world through simulating real-world challenges. In short, an educational makerspace is less of a classroom and more of a motivational speech without words” (Kurti et al., 2014, p. 11).       I remember the day first time my son saw a robotics team demonstration. We were at our local library and the high school robotics team was teaching a weekly class on the basics of robotics.  He was too young at the time to join this group but he was enraptured with the concept, that summer I signed him for a Lego robotics camp.  Fast forward to a few years he was old enough to join the class at the library, then join the team at his middle school as well as take the class as an elective.  Being witness t...

The Role of the School Library in the Era of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) by Sara Zeller

The Role of the School Library in the Era of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) By Sara Zeller       When I was growing up no one would have handed 9 year old me something worth $500-$1000 and asked me to be responsible with it; to not lose it or break it. And yet here I was 4 years a go sitting in an auditorium listening to the tech department of my 4 th graders school district walk me through the digital literacy and usage policies associated with my sons school issued Ipad.  I thought this is crazy, maybe we should decline the school Ipad and just offer to “bring our own device” and not stress about how much we would eventually owe when we did in fact brake or lose the Ipad.       In a pre-COVID world while a majority of students having cell phones meant that they were and are on campus with a BYOD, most of districts were in a push for classroom equity when it came to laptops and tablets. In the article  School Librarians: Key t...

The Demise of School Libraries: Creating a Culture of Collaboration by Sara Zeller

The Demise of School Libraries: Creating a Culture of Collaboration By Sara Zeller       If I were to ask any parent, teacher or administrator to advocate for the “why” of a school library I would be inundated with personal stories of the benefits the library provides not only the students but also the teachers.  Depending on the demographics of the neighborhood I might hear of how the availability of the intranet and use of computers in the library is essential to students who don’t have it at home, or I might have, at least before COVID-19 shut schools down and demanded the distribution and purchase of technology to all students who didn’t have access. For the remainder of this blog post I am going to do my best to reference a pre-COVID school experience based on available articles and data, but I will not ignore that the push to help all students get access to the internet and have working laptops or Ipad’s could change the needs landscape yet again of t...
