Cloud Computing in Libraries
By Shannon Rapo
Cloud based computing is a technology solution that allows resources and services to be shared over the internet rather than relying on physical hardware or desktop computers. Due to its nature of not needing much by way of physical hardware, cloud computing can be a great way to save money and leverage shared resources across library locations. Companies such as Google have developed cloud computing platforms that make sharing options easy and can be tailored to library and classroom needs. Students no longer need to keep up with software releases and districts are freed up from the expense of upgrading software to the newest releases.
Cloud computing also allows for content to be accessed from multiple access points, be it tablet, desktop, smartphone or any other device with internet compatibility. This creates an opportunity for each library to determine its own needs and fiscal ability to update technology solutions. Cloud computing has opened up a path for libraries to offer technology solutions at a low cost entry point, solidifying its importance to the library. It is here to stay!
