Makerspace was offered at the Temecula Middle School library until the pandemic hit. The makerspace program was somewhat popular with the students. We found that some kids did it to get out of going to their study hall and did not really want to do what we had to offer. Other students came because they enjoyed it! Eventually we had to start a lottery for the students who were there to just get out of study hall not because they enjoyed the activities.
A Steam program was added this year at Temecula Middle School and in the future we plan on working with the teacher who heads that program. In the book, Boost your Steam Program with Great Literature and Activities, 2018, it states “A makerspace can be anywhere and does not really need expensive equipment. It promotes service, learning, investigations and reflection. It teaches students there is more than one correct or possible answer to a problem, and failure is allowed and encouraged because it promotes deep thinking and resilience. It also provides students with practice for real-world application.”
Makerspace can be a fun beneficial way for students to learn! By collaborating with the steam teacher we will be able to offer more activities that are not only fun but teach students new ways to apply the information they are learning in class.
