Working at Temecula Middle School Library as a library assistant during a pandemic has shown me and others how indispensable the library is to both students and staff. Although the school was closed the library continued to operate to help with technology issues with both the students and the staff. The library was a connection to the school for kids who took advantage of our help with technology, checking out books and just feeling connected to a safe place.
April Witteven, in the article, The Year of Doing Everything, 2020, stated “library staff using a variety of creative approaches to maintain their commitment to delivering the best library services possible...are taking the lead on technology, collaborating more deeply with colleagues, and creating or strengthen their relationships with students during these challenging times.” The flexibility and innovation our library has shown in figuring out new ways to meet our students and staff needs has strengthened our position within the school.
The demise of the school library? No, it’s almost a fresh start much like a rebirth of the school library and what it has to offer.
